Frequently Asked Questions
  • Where is Homespun located?

Homespun opened in July 2010 in an 800 sq. ft. storefront on East Washington Street on the east side of Indianapolis in the historic Irvington neighborhood. After three and a half amazing years there, we relocated to a larger space about 10 minutes west of our original location.

The shop is now located at 869 Massachusetts Ave at the east end of Mass Ave in the Trailside building. We are just off of 10th Street, and share the 800/900 block with other great small businesses like Indy Reads Books, The Best Chocolate in Town, Mass Ave Wine, Natural Born Juicers, Black Market, Rooster’s Kitchen, QualityYats, City Dogs Grocery, Mass Ave Tattoo, Crimson Tate, Boomerang BTQ, and more!

Free parking for patrons is always available on Davidson Street, which runs just north of our storefront and curves behind the Trailside building. In addition, after 5:30pm and on weekends, patrons shopping and dining at businesses in the Trailside building may park for free in the lot behind the shops. Please note that street parking on Mass Ave is metered.

  • When is Homespun open?

Our current hours are as follows.

    Monday – Thursday: 10am-8pm
    Friday & Saturday: 10am-9pm
    Sunday: 11am-6pm

We may offer extended hours throughout November and December, as well as for special downtown and Mass Ave events. Please feel free to call to check if we’ll be open late on any of those occasions. Our store number is (317) 351-0280.

  • What do you mean by "Modern Handmade"?

Homespun is devoted to contemporary handmade goods; the tagline “Modern Handmade” describes products that are crafted using traditional techniques but designed for a contemporary audience. Many of our artists incorporate pop culture references, fresh new fabric patterns, and current fashion and design trends into their work.

  • What kind of products do you sell at Homespun?

Homespun represents more than 400 makers and carries a wide range of goods including, but not limited to, bath and body care, cosmetics, jewelry, housewares, home décor, greeting cards, stationery, artisanal foods, wall art, toys, and apparel and accessories for men, women, and children. You can see a small sampling of our vendors and their work here.

  • Is everything locally made?

Nope, not everything is made in Indiana, but approximately half of our 400+ vendors do live and work in the Hoosier state. The rest of the products we carry come directly from individual artists, crafters and makers from across the U.S. and Canada. Most of our vendors rent studio space or work from their homes. A few do have their own retail storefronts.

  • How do you find the work you carry?

Homespun’s maker portfolio is a mix of artists we’ve sought out and artists who reach out to us. Our involvement with the regional and national contemporary craft communities has put us in contact with hundreds of extraordinary makers, many of whom have referred their friends and acquaintances to Homespun. If you are a maker interested in having your work carried at Homespun, please fill out this online submission form.

  • How can I sell my work at Homespun?

If you are interested in consigning at Homespun, please go here to fill out our vendor application for consideration.  Due to the volume of submissions that show up in our inbox, please allow up to four (4) weeks for a response to move forward with your vendor acceptance.  If you don’t hear from us, it means we have not selected you for further consideration in the shop.  We thank you for your time and interest in becoming a vendor at Homespun.

  • Can I bring samples of my work to Homespun to show you in person?

Out of respect for our customers, we ask that vendors not pitch products to us at the store during business hours. Please fill out the online submission form found here on our website and submit electronically.

  • How does selling at Homespun work?

Homespun operates on a consignment model with signed contracts, monthly payouts and sales statements.

  • How are the prices of the products determined?

Vendors set the retail price of every item sold in the store and receive 50% of the retail price (a typical wholesale/consignment split) after the sale.

  • Do you accept returns or exchanges?

Due to our consignment model and the handmade nature of the goods we carry, Homespun does not accept returns with the exception of products found to be damaged or faulty prior to purchase. Homespun can offer exchanges, but they must be completed within 30 days with a receipt.  We do not accept returns or exchanges on goods damaged by customers through misuse (application of water, chemicals, dyes, tears, breakage, etc.) after purchase. All sales are final on food, beverage, and apothecary items.

  • Do you run the INDIEana Handicraft Exchange?

Yes. Amanda and Neal founded the INDIEana Handicraft Exchange in 2007 and continue to produce multiple events each year. Our biggest annual event is our summer show, held in conjunction with the Independent Music + Art Festival (IMAF) at the Harrison Center for the Arts. That show falls each year on the second Saturday of June. We traditionally also offer a holiday show held on the first Friday of December, again at the HCA.
